Trenton, Ontario – September 9, 2020 – In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the latest guidance provided by the Government of Ontario and the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Trenton Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) has decided to postpone its annual military family event - Movie on the Block 2020. This socially-distanced drive-in movie event was to be held on Saturday, September 12, 2020, on the Parade Square at 8 Wing/CFB Trenton.
It was mid-August when the Trenton MFRC, along with its partner 8 Wing Personnel Support Program, unveiled plans to once again host our annual military family welcome event. This has been a tradition that dates back over a decade and has served as one of the first opportunities for newly posted families to learn about the resources and the support systems available to them. In the past, we have welcomed the public to tour our facility and to interact with participating community partners. Taking into consideration the information that was available to us at the time, we felt it was possible to move forward and transform this tradition into a socially-distanced drive-in movie.
On Tuesday, September 8, Premier Ford held a press conference with Health Minister Christine Elliott to update Ontarians of the latest updates about COVID-19. In her address, Minister Elliott noted, under the advice of Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams, a "pause of four weeks" would be taken before considering any further, "loosening of public health measures or further reopening of businesses facilities and organizations." As a result, the Trenton MFRC has considered this guidance and feels it is in the best interest, safety and well-being of our military members, their families and the community to postpone the event.
We have a responsibility to reduce the potential spread of COVID-19 in our community and must remain diligent in ensuring we keep each other both safe and accountable. We know that our military families can appreciate this familiar call for adaptability and flexibility - a true asset in these uncertain times. We will continue to adapt and monitor the environment and keep families informed. The health of our community is a joint responsibility, and we thank everyone for understanding and allowing us to do our part. In the meantime, staff at the Trenton MFRC will continue to offer their modified programs, services and support both virtually and by telephone.
We are currently looking into hosting this event in Spring 2021, as long as it is safe to do so. While we may not be able to enjoy a night under the stars together at this time, your family at the Trenton MFRC would still like to offer our military families an evening of fun on us!
