The Trenton MFRC strives to be a home away from home for military families… but did you know that we are also a home away from home for many wonderful children of military and local civilian families?

These wonderful little humans are cared for by 80 AMAZING RECEs and child care providers between four child care sites in Trenton, Belleville, Batawa, and St. Mary’s School in Trenton.

The day of an early childhood educator is almost certainly covered in drool, boogers, or glitter. There’s often a symphony of sounds - laughter, crying, babbling, music, clapping - sometimes all at once. Food can be thrown, smeared, refused, or gobbled up. Toys can be shared or they can turn into something to play tug-of-war with. And getting 10 + infants or toddlers to settle and sleep all at the same time seems like something of a magic trick.

Throw in COVID-19 and the RECEs and child care providers have been levelled up to super hero/magical wizard status!

Since March 2020, the day in the life of an RECE and child care provider has changed.  In the early days of the pandemic, like  many others, staff had to manage the stress of job uncertainty. Others took on the role of Emergency Child Care provider in a time when most people were under a stay-at-home order. When daycares opened again, cleaning took on a whole new meaning. Sanitizing entire rooms and anything that can be touched or put into a little mouth happens three times a day - without taking time away from the littles. To add to this, drop offs and pickups have been completely overhauled with both parents and child care providers having less face to face interaction which often helped educators and providers understand the needs of the families.

All in all, RECEs and child care providers continue to show us what they’re made of - compassion, strength, perseverance, high spirits, and a little bit of magic. They can rise to a challenge, adapt to the needs of the community, and they always put the needs of the children in their care first. They do this because they have genuine affection for the young people entrusted to their care.

As we celebrate Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day, keep in mind how much RECEs and child care providers do every day but more importantly, how much JOY they bring to childrens’ lives every day.

"Working with the children and seeing all their faces light up when they see you every day. I enjoy being able to plan different things for the kids knowing how excited they get, and seeing the children grow. " - Trenton MFRC RECE staff, 2021
